Bioluminescent countershading in midwater animals: evidence from living squid.

Midwater squid respond to overhead illumination by turning on numerous downward-directed photophores; they turn off the photophores when overhead illumination is eliminated. The squid are invisible when the intensity of the photophores matches the intensity of the overhead illumination. These results strongly support the theory of ventral bioluminescent countershading.

The effects of acoustic misclassification on cetacean species abundance estimation.

To estimate the density or abundance of a cetacean species using acoustic detection data, it is necessary to correctly identify the species that are detected. Developing an automated species classifier with 100% correct classification rate for any species is likely to stay out of reach. It is therefore necessary to consider the effect of misidentified detections on the number of observed data a...

Acoustic estimation of krill abundance utilizing volume scattering measurements

More than two decades of intensive ecological research in the Antarctic have refined the oversimplistic view of "the Antarctic ecosystem" towards identification and investigation of a number of different subsystems. Within the pack-ice zone of the Weddell Sea (Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean), a summer pelagic system breaks up into ice-bound and deep-living systems in winter. Furthermore...

Big-data approach in abundance estimation of non-identifiable animals with camera-traps at the spots of attraction

Camera-traps is a relatively new but already popular instrument in the estimation of abundance of non-identifiable animals. Although camera-traps are convenient in application, there remain both theoretical complications such as spatial autocorrelation or false negative problem and practical difficulties, for example, laborious random sampling. In the article we propose an alternative way to by...
